A message for our Nooksack Valley School District Community
Dear Nooksack Valley School District Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today. As many of you are now aware, three of our high school students from Nooksack Valley High School were involved in a tragic car accident early Monday morning. One of those students, a 10th grader, passed away due to his injuries. We are holding his family close in our hearts. Two other students, both seniors, were injured and are currently recovering in the hospital. We are hopeful for their full recovery and are keeping them and their families in our thoughts.
The loss of a student is felt across the entire community. We know this news will affect students, families, and staff throughout the district, not just at NVHS. In times of such profound sorrow, we are reminded of our deep connection to one another. Our shared grief is a reflection of our shared love.
Today and in the coming days, we are committed to supporting our students, staff, and families as they navigate this difficult moment. Our Whatcom County Schools Mobile Response Team—comprised of counselors, mental health professionals, and trained crisis support staff—is present at NVHS today and available across the district as needed. If you, your student, or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to your school’s Counseling Hub or front office. Help is here.
Grief can look different for everyone. Whether you’re feeling sadness, anger, confusion, or numbness—these are all valid responses. We encourage open conversations at home and at school, and most importantly, we encourage listening—with empathy, patience, and care.
Thank you for being part of a community that chooses to show up with love, especially when it’s hardest.
With deepest sympathy and shared sorrow,
Matt Galley
Superintendent, NVSD
